Viva Breathing & Allergy

Viva Breathing & Allergy serves adults 18 and older in Doral with asthma, COPD, a persistent cough, seasonal allergies, or sinus symptoms. Children and teens with asthma or allergies are seen in Viva Kids & Teens.

About this program

A provider listens to how your breathing affects work, sleep, and exercise. Then the provider reviews your history, triggers, home and work exposures, smoking or vaping history, and the inhalers or allergy medicines you already use. Your provider coordinates an inhaler review and a written asthma or COPD action plan when needed.

The plan explains daily care, early warning signs, and what to do during a flare. Allergy and sinus care focuses on avoiding triggers and choosing the right class of medicine for your symptoms. Breathing tests such as spirometry, chest imaging, and allergy testing are coordinated with outside services when indicated; confirm access and acceptance.

Hard-to-control disease, low oxygen, or an unclear diagnosis is referred to a lung or allergy specialist. To book, request a visit through the appointment page and bring your inhalers, allergy medicines, and any prior test results. Bring questions about symptoms and any medicine side effects.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a breathing test to be diagnosed with asthma or COPD?

Spirometry measures exhaled air volume and speed and often helps confirm asthma or COPD. Indicated testing requires outside coordination. Confirm access, cost, and who reviews results; a referral does not establish acceptance.

Why does my provider want to watch me use my inhaler?

Technique errors can reduce the inhaled dose. Demonstrating your inhaler helps identify them. Your provider can discuss device technique, a spacer, or another device when appropriate. Bring your inhalers and questions.

What is an asthma action plan?

An action plan is a written guide you keep at home. It lists your daily medicines, the early signs that your asthma is getting worse, the steps to take at each stage, and when to call for help or go to the emergency room. Adults with COPD can have a similar flare plan. Your provider coordinates the plan and its review with your breathing-care team when needed.

How can I tell allergies from a sinus infection?

Allergies often cause sneezing, itchy eyes, and clear drainage that come and go with the season or with triggers like dust or pets. A sinus infection more often brings facial pressure, thick drainage, and congestion that lasts more than 10 days or gets worse after starting to improve. Most sinus symptoms come from viruses and do not need antibiotics.

My cough has lasted for weeks. Is that normal?

In adults, a cough that lasts more than 8 weeks is called a chronic cough. Common causes include postnasal drip, asthma, acid reflux, smoking, and some blood-pressure medicines. Your provider reviews your history and exposures and orders tests when they are needed. Coughing up blood, weight loss, or night sweats needs prompt evaluation.

Can follow-up visits be done by video?

Some action-plan, result, and treatment-response reviews may suit video. New or worsening breathing symptoms or an examination generally require in-person assessment. Confirm the visit type; emergencies need direct urgent care.

Can you help me quit smoking or vaping?

Quitting is one of the most helpful steps for asthma, COPD, and chronic cough. Your provider can talk about your goals, review the classes of medicine that can ease cravings, and connect you with free quit-line support. Many people need more than one try, and every attempt teaches you something useful for the next one.

Urgent symptoms

  • Severe shortness of breath, or being unable to speak in full sentences
  • Blue or gray lips or fingernails
  • An asthma or COPD attack that does not improve with your rescue inhaler
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble swallowing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Chest pain together with trouble breathing
  • Feeling drowsy or confused during an asthma or COPD flare
  • For any of these, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.

When we refer

An unclear diagnosis, asthma or COPD that stays hard to control, low oxygen levels, or breathlessness that keeps getting worse is referred to a lung specialist. Repeated serious allergic reactions, suspected immune problems, structural nose or sinus problems, and allergy shots involve an allergy or ear, nose and throat specialist. You never have to try primary-care treatment first when a referral is already needed.
